692 cool Smile i never typed that fast... I'm pretty constant. I can improve my typing from 400-450 cpm with no more that 100 cpm. I just can't although I practice a lot for those 100 cpm...

Well, I've seen the ghosts but didn't used them too much... although from what I've spoked with some fast typist (Son) he told me that they are pretty good in helping improving your speed on a text. I should get used to them and see for myself Smile

And about the flags.. well I'm sure not a xenophobe or something like that but I tend to extend the competition to country vs country in my mind. It's more thrilling I guess Smile)

Do you mean improving during a session? Then, I suppose, "bottom" and "upper" limits of your skills don't differ much as yet. It will come with many-years-practice, I think Smile
For me (in the Russian), to improve up to 150 cpm during a session is nearly normal. For high records - up to 200 is needed, though! That's rather hard - not for my everyday practice ))))

As I see the directions of work:
= to raise one's level "from top to bottom" - fast typing short texts;
= "from bottom to top" - typing very long texts at a low speed 1-2 hours a day.

Yes I think you are right. So it is with the Big Sports. There certainly should have been some reasoning for the tradition getting that way...

Somebody on the forum has compared Urikor' participants with "Russia Olympic team" - I think everybody felt the joke but it looked splendid nevertheless Smile

super! The link seems important.
If I was the admin I would put your link, and all the branch http://www.tifaq.com/keyboards, in the "Keyboards" section of the Urikor's site. It's a pity all the articles in that section are in the Russian language. - Can't say: go and see Smile.

I put your link into my ФАВТ http://www.liveinternet.ru/users/faq_avtandiline/post15073026/
Thanks Sensiblu. Do you have used any of those sophisticated keyboards? or have seen people typing on them?

For myself, I use standard keyboard because there are several places where I type, and keyboards should be of the same design, more or less. In order to be able to keep high speed. The less do keyboards differ the better.
This simple reason, or rather must Sad , is first-of-all to be considered.

Besides the fact they are pretty expensive.. I never saw anything like it in Romania and probably won't see too soon. There aren't too much people who would use them I guess. I personally used 4 keyboards... Some standard microsoft 101/102 keys.. Didn't like it after I learned touch typing becaues the keys were pressing rather hard. Then I had a multimedia keyboard as a present Smile) but didn't like it too much how the keys were pressed... So I bought an A4Tech A-Shaped keyboard.. That's a pretty cool and very cheap keyboard. The keys press easily and its' supposed to prevent rsi. But I saw 1 week ago something cooler Smile It's a keyboard that pressed like a laptop keyboard. I mean you only have to press a key about half of the press you would do on a normal keyboard... And besides that it's as big as a normal keyboard. I did type on laptop keyboards and I didn't like them because they had the keys very crowded and did a lot of mistakes and I could't hold my hands naturally but this one is just like a normal keyborad and presses like a laptop.. It's some kind of hybrid Smile) But I am very happy with it. It increased my speed by a constant 30 cpm Smile) Not as much as I expected but it's an improvement Smile Well at least it gives me the sensation that I type really really fast when I type on it Smile Guess its because of the short key press and I like that.

Btw.. I also saw some alternative mouse devices on that site with the alternative keyboards... like the one that moves the mouse cursor with your eyemovements.. and clicks when you blink.. pretty cool Smile But they are way too expensive for my budget Sad

Sensiblu, congratulations! It's so very important to have a keyboard that feels the best !

I'm always in search. My old keyboard wasn't THE best, but it was rather good. It was a "no-name" thing, of NAN TAN COMPUTER Co., made in Taiwan. It had been working hard for ~18-20 years, until this winter Sad . I hope I could find something instead. Your info and other (for instance here on the Urikor site - section "Keyboards" and forum) would be very helpful, to fresh my general view on the market possibilities. Thank you for the info!

For now, I just haven't anything of interest to tell on my current keyboards. Except the story of how I got that old one of mine Smile

I've changed it by a person in office whom I taught using PC. (It happened in the early years of PC-office "revolution" in Russia). Both of us were given our PC's, keyboards included, at work, not picked the models to our own liking. (There wasn't even a place where to pick - no IT-shops in this country yet )). He considered his keyboard to be very annoying since it typed at the lightest touch a key. He was really HAPPY to get my "dummy-to-beat, and beat, and beat once more" of a box with buttons! He said: Now I can stay "lying" on it with all my upper body, and happily not a single letter will be typed!
...I wonder what did he need a keyboard for, at all... Wink

The very point of the story is that at the time there was several hundreds of users whom I daily taught how to operate the PC (that was my work), and several hundreds of keyboards, respectively. And step by step I had tried those hundreds before there was a single one really comfortable for me!..

Many of people thought me just a capricious one... But we here do realize what matters, don't we... Reading you have 30% improvement due to the good-for-you keyboard - I can't but be happy about your luck Smile

Oh I think no reason to grieve at all. It might be rather tiresome to control one's own blinking as a device for work Laughing

May be, it is better to map a double eye-blink to a singe mouse click? Wink

If you press the pass button and press the esc key before the script is loaded some nasty errors appear. like startChars null or NoObject... and things like that. In Internet Explorer it only asks me if I want to continue to run scripts on the page but in mozilla firefox with IE tab plugin (10x for telling me about the existence of the IE tab plugin Roman) it asks me if I want to debug or not. And if I choose to debug there's the entire source code visible in plain text Smile Didn't know this... Umm.. I don't know what causes the error... probably the objects don't get created or something like that... ?

I only know that the script is made to use with MS Explorer, and couldn't finction properly in other browsers.

So you have the reason to use Mozilla instead? Not just because of your personal likings, but because there's not a modul needed for comfortably staying with Romania language alphabet or layout, - so you have to quit your usual "working space" to participate in Urikor contest?

If so - yes it's a pity to take something uncomfortable and do excessive steps - to be able to participate at all. (For instance, I must go to Internet cafes to have a chance to type at a maximum speed. - There are no possibilities to do it at my home (some technological problems with my hardware). It's awful but what else can be done, I wonder... Still, I like the contest, so I do what I can under the circumstances). Some participants just HAVE to use MS Explorer for the contest, in spite of what's their usual browser.

No no no Smile You got it wrong. It gives the same nasty error in Internet Explorer too. Just that in Internet explorer there is no "Debug" button on the error message.
I do not have to switch layouts to participate in the contest. I never used the Romanian layout because it's rather tiresome to type with the few extras symbols that the Romanian alphabet has and you can be understood very easily without those characters because it's only ţ î â ă ş which can be typed like normal t i a a s and the words are perfectly understandable (if you know romanian Smile
I didn't quite understand why can't you type from you home? Is there a delay or something? I've experienced a delay of 5-10 characters when I went to a net cafe because they had a rather slow connection and old computers. Don't know which is the problem? Is it the computer or the internet connection?

(I'm afraid I won't be able to tell short, in the English)). Yes there is a vast delay on longer texts (as in Russian Championship "profi" and "usual" league). The cursor gets very slow and after typing several lines I don't have new lines to type (in the bottom of the screen) - the very scrolling stops until the cursor would come to the next line (in the top of the screen))). I have to sit and wait - when the text scrolls one line more. And so forth, line by line ))) The speed gets limited to 300 or like that... - You see, a delay of 5-10 characters would be rather nice )))
On short texts as now in Daily Tasks there's practically no delay.

We discussed it on forum, and it seems like my PC is to blame, yes it is very old (Pentium II) and the main point might be that this PC has some specific (customized to work in Win 3.11, not only in Win 98. - Win 3.11 was needed. And might still be needed).

So all my results in the Russian Championship were made in net cafe. In Moscow, there's a lot of cafes, most of those I went have modern PC and full-speed Internet connection, but the keyboards and furniture to sit - are very-very uncomfortable for fast typing Smile At last, I found one cafe with ONE good keyboard (of all the many keyboards there are at that place!). But often when I come and see - somebody is sitting and having a game on that very machine, and I have to wait - maybe the machine will be free, or maybe not. So all that tends to be rather ugly (tiresome) and takes time. Money wasted, too )).

The very comical point is that now Daily Tasks are made short - but I still can't type from my home at my highest in the Russian! The fact remains, only the reason changed ))))) Now it's my good keyboard that broke and the two other keyboards don't allow me more than 550-620 or so. - The Providence prefers me not to contest Russian at home Smile

In fact I don't take the situation too seriosly. Let it be as it is Smile If I see a really good keyboard to buy - I'll buy it, and this part of the problem will be solved.
My "main" PC (on which I do my essential works - photo and other tasks) - I don't come into Internet on that machine, so as not to get a virus or the PC unexpectedly customized with auto procedures running from some websites.

I think Romanian should be a rich language - Eminescu could put his divine verses on it Smile Once I've met a specialist in the Romanian, she loved the language very much.
But those diacritics and what else of the kind - I hate them, in any language ))))

I think you could play the game from your main computer virus free by using a Virtual Machine... Don't know if you've heard of it but it's like this.. there's a program called Vmware that allows you to create a virtual PC in your operating system.. It let's you decide how much ram it will use from your PC and you chose how large the hard disk will be. Now the best part is that the hard disk for the virtual machine will be actually a file ( big one depending on how much you want it to be) on your real harddisk. After you've set up this you can start the program when you want. It's run from you're current operating system and you can install an operating system in you're virtual machine (the virtual machine is just a program) Smile The best part is that you can do whatever you want in the virtual machine and nothing will come out of it(remember when I told you the virtual hard disk is ONE big file Smile And you can mess up with it how many times you want. It won't affect your real files and your real operating system.

I personally use it for running Linux from time to time because I can't get my 5.1 sound system work under Linux Smile) So I listen to music from Windows and work in Linux Smile)

It does use a lot of Ram memory. You need ~512 mb (because you have to share to the virtual operating system when you want to run it)

Of course.. there are some simpler ways for your problem like DeepFreeze:)) But I like this one because it's like having two TOTALLY seperated computers in one Smile

Sensiblu, great thanks for your advice.
I haven't heard on that "Virtual Machine" before. The idea seems good.
(RAM? There's just 512 Mb or so of RAM. ~60 or 90 of them used as video-ram, but ram can be upgraded up to 1024 and that would be enough). I'll think it over.

The more could it be useful now. I'd like to try TypingZone, so WinXP is needed, I have it on my main PC and TypingZone software proved to work, I have done a test but the results are to be sent somehow )))))

Still, all that does need to make changes in my main PC, and that's the very thing I'd prefer to avoid by any means ))))

512 mb in total... so you could give .. I don't know 256 mb to the virtual operating system.. You don't really need 1 Gb. I though I needed 1 GB for running windows xp and linux at the same time but I never get to use more than 400-500 mb maximum (including the linux running simultaneous with windows). I don't play video games or something like that .. those are the ones that need that much ammount of RAM... Well you know better if you really need 1 GB... but if you don't intend to play video games, or 3d applications then.. I really don't think there's any point in 1 GB... I never get to use them all... but in the near future.. who knows.. they are very cheap these days.. 50-60 US dollars for 512 mb ddr, in my town.

Ah, 512 should be enough for that "virtual machine"?
All the better! Thank you Sensiblu. If I decide to try it, maybe I'll ask you for one more piece of your advice, as to where and how Smile
(Photo, 2D Graphics. PhotoShop seems to ask me more free place on hard disk than in RAM Smile In the future, there shall be a little of video editing. So I'm glad with 512. I exist in two modes alternatively: just after bying more external memory, or - just before bying it )))).

I was thinking today, while I was typing the numeric daily task... Why isn't there a SYMBOL daily task where you could exercise the special symbols. I mean we all type pretty fast around here but for most of us that is only for plain text.

I've began exercising my numeric keypad skills every day by typing a few times the numeric daily text because I really suck at numeric and that's for symbols too. I would like to exercise the symbols too. I don't know how many of you type !@#$%^&*()-_=+][}{\|'";:,<.>/? pretty fast. I mean I am a student in computer science and I have to type those symbols too and I would really use some daily exercise on these besides programming Wink)

If it's possible ... of course.

a SYMBOL Daily Task might be useful, I think. Not for everybody, but there certainly are some people. (By the way, in the Russian part, many participants are of IT professions).

Shall see what Urikor will say.

As to your question on !@#$%^&*()-_=+][}{\|'";:,<.>/? Smile
The following part of them: ! ? #(russian №) % * ( ) - _ : ; - all these are very often used in common and/or office language. Very-very often! So it's not too difficult to type them ~as fast as letters.
Others aren't often (as far as I can be a judge)). So, they are possibly be typed rather slower, by many of us except those of IT professions.

Numerals in Daily Task - as for me, I type them with the upper 4th row, not with numeric pad. More often than not, numerals are an essential part of a common text, in an awful mix and mess with letters Smile typing with main pad and with numeric pad would be too slow (to move the hand aside and back). So, for me numeric pad is rather of no importance at all.

Still, I would share the opinion of those who have to deal with accounting and like that. - I don't like the fact that a digital phoneset pad has the inverted order of numerics, there should be as in computers, imho ))

I type them with both the upper 4th row and with the numeric pad. I seem to type them twice as fast with the upper 4th row because seldomly I encouter numbers in the every day typing and somewhat the skill is more developed than that of the numeric keypad Wink)

Of course when you only encounter few letters like a date, or a year it would be a mistake to try to type them on the numerical pad because it would take you a lot of time only to move your hand to the numerical pad.

But when you have to type a lot of numbers in a row you can type them extremely fast.. after enough practice using the numerical pad. That and the fact that I wish to know how to type fast all the keys on the keyboard has determined me to exercise some 5 minutes a day on the numeric pad Wink) There's no hurry.. in time I will get faster with it Smile)

))) Sometimes I do type numbers with both the upper 4th row and with the numeric pad at the same working flow. In some routine procedures of copying data from Internet or so into Excel, and making editions and addings. The right hand is busy with mouse and cursor arrows - "over" numeric pad, so the right-hand-numbers I type on numeric pad, while the left-hand numbers - on the upper 4th row )))) All that in no hurry at all, and very comfortable, so the speed on left and on right does not differ much Smile

Of course you will Sensiblu. 5 minutes a day make a whole lot at the far end! Good luck Smile

Hello everyone,

First of all, congratulations to Yuri for all his dedication of making Urikor.net what it is.
I'm Arthur, one of Liviu Sensiblu's friends, one of whom he lured into this Championship.
I read Liviu mentioning the keyboard layout issue. Now I would really like to say something regarding keyboard layouts.
Before the advent of the computer era, Romanian typists used to type on typewriters with Romanian layout, which comprised more or less the standard Romanian layout that comes with Windows (I heard some guys want to submit a new layout for standardization). I also found Romanian books containing touch typing courses, based on the Romanian layout, which like many other European layouts has QWERTZ and features j k l ş as home keys for the right hand. When I first started typing — I started to learn MS Word 6.0 about 12 years ago — I did it on standard US layout, Windows 3.1 had no intrinsic support for Romanian keyboard layout. It was 1997 when I had first installed Windows 95 by myself and I also included international support and set the default system code page to Central European. I quickly got used to the Romanian layout, but still in 2002, when I started playing trivia in the chat room where I would met Liviu 2.5 years later, I could only reach an average of 160 cpm. Certainly, trivia improved my typing skills (tripled them) ... but there still is a tiny problem. I have a very high difficulty in two things. The first one is touch typing by the book. I just can't do it. I tried to learn. I was stunned when I saw Liviu type after a couple of months of hard practice (he first used only 2 fingers to type, now he's typing almost flawlessly). I do type without looking at the keyboard, but still I don't follow strict rules. The other problem is the keyboard layout. I'm using the Romanian layout almost exclusively and it's very difficult for me to switch occasionally to US; sometimes I don't realize I'm using the US layout, and all my reflexes regarding orientation on keyboard are now based on the Romanian one. Now the thing is that the Champ script does not entirely support other layouts, it supports QWERTZ, but is does not support different punctuation placements (I have to type ş to get ; or Ţ for ", because Shift + , gets < or Shift + 2 would make @). Could you make the script scan all keycodes according to the players currently active keyboard layout?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Arthur,
you are welcome here.

So yet another "graduate from trivia typing school" Smile
May I ask you... What makes you think that to follow strict typing rules should be necessary for you?
To re-arrange one’s skills is rather difficult, one should be SURE the task is worth working hard and for long... And any skills are the more resistent if gained through game excitement.
Liviu’s time spent in games is much less than yours.

On your script remarks, I can only tell you that several of participants (me included)) do have various problems with the script Sad
We'll see what Yuri will say as to yours.
Yuri makes and improves this site as an enthusiast. Besides Yuri there’s only one programmer to develop the software, Pavel his name. I think they have so many things to make, and not too much of time and other resources Smile
